Australian & NZ Mineral Census

Mineral Information

The dream of many mineral collectors is to have a complete listing of the minerals occurring in the Australasian region (comprised of the States and Territories of Australia, and the islands of New Zealand), but of course, this is an unrealistic aim. Minerals new to the region, or sometimes even new to science, are continually being found.

Even if this were not the case, the physical size of the data would be more than a single publication could hope to provide, and would take an eternity to produce. The advent of the Internet provided an opportunity to compile a census in a way that is relatively easy to update and can be published and made available to millions of people worldwide.

This census is available here and contains in the region of 26,000 entries. Input to the census has come from available databases and publications, and a significant effort by the late John Carroll of Melbourne in particular. Contact me if you want to know the original references where they are not listed...
